Business has gone global. Multinational companies have offices in multiple countries. Thanks to the internet, even small businesses may have suppliers or customers in multiple countries. As a result, there is increasing demand for people with knowledge of the international environment and business activities.
The International Business Major combines extensive study of international issues with one of the traditional functional areas. It provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in our world of complex competitive environments, diverse cultures, and integrated business decisions.
Degree Requirements
In order to receive a BBA with a major in International Business, you must meet KSU’s requirements for the degree and major as listed in your KSU Undergraduate Catalog. The Catalog you must follow is generally based on your “matriculation date” - the date you started at KSU. You may choose to use any later Catalog if you wish. Also, you are required to use a Catalog that is not more than 10 years old when you graduate.

The Business Undergraduate Advising Center has prepared “checksheets” for each major to summarize the courses you are required to take and some of the basic rules you must follow. Referring to these checksheets does not eliminate your responsibility for following all the rules in your Catalog. The checksheets may be picked up at any time from the display racks in the waiting area of the Advising Center (BB 431). Be sure to pick the checksheets that match the Catalog year you must use. The checksheets are also available using the links below. (You will need Adobe Reader to open these checksheets.)

The IB major started in Fall 2007 so there are no earlier checksheets.
Foreign Language Requirement
The International Business major requires fluency in an approved language other than English. The level of fluency required is equivalent to that achieved by successfully completing nine hours of courses in a foreign language at the 2000-level or above. Students who believe they are already fluent in an approved foreign language may be able to demonstrate that fluency in a manner other than taking the language courses. Students who are allowed to take advantage of these alternatives do not have the nine hours waived - they will still have to fill the nine hours for their degree.
International Study Experience Requirement
Students must take at least three hours of "Education Abroad" or "Exchange" program courses approved by the IB Program Director.
"Education Abroad" courses (generally called "Study Abroad courses") are taught by KSU faculty. They generally involve a trip of approximately two weeks, with class meetings and coursework before and after. You can learn about these programs directly from the KSU faculty involved. Exchange Programs generally involve a semester abroad at another university, with courses taught by the faculty of that university. KSU belongs to a consortium of schools offering Exchange Programs (ISEP), plus has some other exchange agreements set up with individual schools. Information about exchange opportunities is available from KSU's IGI - Institute for Global Initiatives (2nd floor - Willingham Hall). The KSU IGI handles the paperwork associated with international study (visas, etc.).
Not all courses offered at other universities will be accepted by KSU, and some that are accepted for credit hours will not satisfy a requirement for the BBA degree. So it is very important to plan ahead for your international experience. You need to identify the courses you are interested in far in advance of any registration deadlines and discuss them with the IB Program Director.
To discuss the possibility of international work experience counting in this area, contact the IB Program Director.
IB Program Director
The IB Program Director is Dr. Sheb True. He is also the Executive Director of the Coles International Center. He will help you understand the advantages of an International Business Major and the associated career opportunities. He can also give you general guidance on available international activities that will make you more competitive in the job market or as a graduate school applicant. However, the daily face-to-face advising on specific course and Major requirements for IB Majors is done by the Staff Advisors in the Business Undergraduate Advising Center (BB 431). The Staff Advisors are available each weekday and are the best source for help with your technical requirements and questions related to the IB Program including substitution forms, Exchange approval forms, etc.
