Accounting Major

Degree Requirements

In order to receive a BBA with a Major in Accounting, you must meet KSU’s requirements for the degree and Major as listed in your KSU Undergraduate Catalog. The Catalog you must follow is generally based on your “matriculation date” - the date you started at KSU. You may choose to use any later Catalog if you wish. You are required to use a Catalog that is not more than 10 years old when you graduate, so if you do not graduate within 10 years of starting at KSU, you will have to move up to a later Catalog.  Also, if you stay out of school for an extended period of time, you will have to move up to the current Catalog when you return.

The Business Undergraduate Advising Center has prepared “checksheets” for each Major to summarize the courses you are required to take and some of the basic rules you must follow. Referring to these checksheets does not eliminate your responsibility for following all the rules in your Catalog. The checksheets may be picked up at any time from the display racks in the waiting area of the Advising Center (BB 431). Be sure to pick the checksheets that match the Catalog year you must use. The checksheets are also available using the links below. (You will need Adobe Reader to open these checksheets.)

CPA and Other Certifications

There are several certifications that are attractive to Accounting professionals. The most well-known is the CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Becoming a CPA is necessary to be successful in a public accounting career. However, all Accounting majors should consider getting this certification because it is widely recognized by businesses and individuals as representing a significant accomplishment. The AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) and the Board of Accountancy in each state are involved in the awarding of this certification/license.

Accounting professionals may also become CMAs - Certified Management Accountants. This certification focuses more on the knowledge and skills used in positions within individual companies rather than for public accounting. The Institute of Management Accountants [IMA] administers this certification process.

Another major certification option for Accounting professionals is the CIA - Certified Internal Auditor. This certification focuses on the knowledge and skills used by internal auditors, and is administered by the Institute of Internal Auditors [IIA].
