When to Seek Advising
Since you are in college, you are no doubt capable of reading the KSU Undergraduate Catalog and following the requirements it lists for your degree. You are also capable of checking course prerequisites, planning your schedule, and keeping track of where you stand in the process of earning your BBA. However, it is likely that at some point you will want additional information or clarification about something related to your business program. That’s when you should contact an advisor or the Business Undergraduate Advising Center.
Even if you have no questions, we encourage you to draft a schedule plan for all your business coursework during the first term of your sophomore year and make an appointment to review that plan with an advisor. If you are a transfer student who is a junior or senior, you should prepare a similar plan and review it with an advisor during your first term at KSU. It is much better to prevent problems before they occur (such as not having the prerequisite for a course) than to have to deal with the consequences afterward. There are sample 4 year schedules available at the Advising Center to use as a basis for your plan.
The Business Undergraduate Advising Center is located in Room 431 of the Burruss Building (BB) and can be reached at 770-423-6055.
How Advising Works in the Coles College of Business
Business majors are not assigned a particular person as their advisor. Instead, all majors are advised by the Coles College Advising Team. There are both full-time staff advisors and faculty members on the Team. Any member of the Team can help you with questions about your BBA degree requirements. You do not have to visit a faculty member in your major area. Select the Advising Team link in this section to learn more about the members of the Team.
Walk-in advising hours are available each weekday that KSU is open and on occasional Saturdays - no appointment is necessary. In addition, appointment times are available on some weekdays. The advising schedule differs depending on whether classes are in session or not, and on whether it is a registration period or not. Schedule information is available at the Advising Center. FYI - Advisors are always busier in the weeks just before and after a registration period starts, so it is best to plan ahead and visit them several weeks prior to registration to avoid long lines.
Why Do We Use the Team Approach Rather than Assign Individual Advisors?
We believe that the Team approach provides you with better information in a more efficient manner. The Team members have been selected because they enjoy advising and are dedicated to helping students. They have made the commitment to keep up to date on Coles College programs and policies. They also know (or are willing to find out) where students need to go for answers to questions about the policies and procedures established by other KSU offices.
It is also an advantage that you do not have to track down a specific person - you can request help from any member of the Team. We try to spread the walk-in hours of the Team members out as much as possible to make it convenient for you to get help. If you had only one person as your advisor, his/her schedule might be completely different from yours - for example, he/she might teach on Monday/Wednesday and you attend classes on Tuesday/Thursday.
