Michael J. Coles is the namesake of Coles College of Business and is currently CEO of Caribou Coffee, the world's second largest coffee company headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to Caribou Coffee, Coles was CEO and Founder of The Great American Cookie Company, which in 1997 had sales that topped $100 million annually.

Philanthropist, entreprenuer, and visionary are some of the words that commonly come to mind when one thinks of Michael. In the fall of 2005 Coles Executive MBA students, alumni, family and friends had the honor to meet Michael Coles and his wife Donna at a spirited reception that was followed by a high energy and interactive learning experience. The Executive MBA gave Michael a Goethe inspired plaque that read "Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic to it." Those words encompass the spirt of Michael and the Coles College of Business.
