Mission Statement

The mission of the KSU BrainLab is to discover impactful solutions for brain-computer interfaces by uncovering the underlying characteristics that affect users’ responses and control.

We are working to design and develop real-world systems that enable people to control computers and other devices using neurophysiological input and to explain individual behaviors in various settings.

Goals & Objectives

The BrainLab has three major objectives it is seeking to achieve:

  1. Understand individual characteristics for control of brain-based devices.
  2. Design methodologies and effective devices to help improve quality-of-life according to the desired needs of the targeted
    end-users.
  3. Assess viability and usefulness of brain-based applications in organizational settings.

These objectives have real application inside and outside of the research lab. Those suffering from locked in syndrome stand to benefit a great deal from effective identification of user characteristics for matching with BCIs. However, there are a myriad of additional applications currently being explored. For example, patients trying to communicate healthcare needs, employers attempting to improve productivity in the workplace, enhanced video-game play, and consumer behavior studies. The BCI field is inherently interdisciplinary: computer science, neuroscience, psychology, electrical engineering, rehabilitation engineering, information systems. Burgeoning fields of study which are incorporating BCIs at their core include Neuroeconomics (the role of the brain when we evaluate decisions, categorize risks and rewards, and interact with each other), Neuromarketing (consumers' sensorimotor, cognitive, and affective response to marketing stimuli like brands and advertising), and Neuro-Information Systems (Design and usability aspects of BCIs for people with disabilities, new uses in organizations, and better understanding of human mental states).
