KSU adds doctoral degree in business, major in dance

Kennesaw State University will add two new degrees at opposite ends of the spectrum: a doctorate of business administration and an undergraduate major in dance.

The degrees were approved Wednesday by the state's Board of Regents at its monthly meeting.

"They're significantly different, but Kennesaw State is a university that has a very diverse set of offerings," said KSU President Daniel S. Papp.

Papp said he hopes to have both programs up and running by this fall.

The doctor of business administration will be the first of its kind in the university system.

It is only the second doctoral program at KSU, joining the doctor of education in leadership for learning, which began in 2007.

Papp said surveys around northwest Georgia showed a market for a doctoral degree.

The doctoral degree is geared toward working professionals, who already have their M.B.A.s. They can take up to three years to complete the requirements.

"If they want to keep their day jobs, they can," Papp said. "If they want to come in full time, that's allowed, too."

Tuition for the doctoral degree will be about $24,000 a year. Prospective students can begin applying immediately by contacting the Coles College of Business.

Papp said the first class will be small — eight to 20 students.

"One of the primary targets is turning out faculty to go to work for universities," Papp said.

A doctorate in nursing sciences is currently undergoing review and commentary at other institutions prior to consideration by the Board of Regents.

"We're hoping for approval sometime in the near future," Papp said.

KSU is also working on adding a doctorate in applied computing and a doctorate in international policy.

"They're being discussed, debated, looked at and put together on campus," Papp said.

The bachelor of arts with a major in dance will be the school's 46th undergraduate major.

KSU began offering a minor in dance nearly three years ago.

"Students were just flocking to it," Papp said. "We did a survey of students who were minoring in dance and asked, 'If you had the opportunity to have a major in dance, would you?' A stunningly large percentage said yes."

The program now has 143 dance minors, five adjunct faculty, and a pre-professional dance company with 30 members.

Course offerings include modern, ballet, jazz, tap, African and ballroom dance.

Papp said KSU has hired "a couple of just crackerjack faculty members" in dance over the past couple of years. The Dr. Bobbie Bailey and Family Performance Center opened in October and KSU just broke ground on a new black box theater.

The KSU Dance Company recently won the regional American College Dance Festival. It will perform at the National College Dance Festival in New York in 2008.

Science enhancements

KSU also announced Wednesday a new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Secondary Science degree program to encourage students to pursue teaching careers.

It will be launched in July in response to predictions that Georgia will experience a shortfall of almost 1,800 middle and high school science teachers by 2010.

Also, Robert Noyce Scholars Program scholarships are available by application through April 1.

Under the Noyce program, students can receive $5,000 to $10,000 per year for up to two years — their senior year of undergrad studies and their first year of study in the MAT program.
