Kennesaw State Professor’s Research on Competitive Bidding Receives National Attention Kennesaw State University professor Brett Katzman’s research paper “Will Competitive Bidding Reduce Medicare Prices?” (with KA McGeary: Drexel University) is receiving national attention. Published just this January in the Southern Economic Journal, the article has already been cited in multiple media outlets. Prominent industry publication, Eli’s Home Care Week noted that the article encouraged the American Association for Homecare to send HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt a letter “calling on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to delay the implementation of round one of competitive bidding until the study can be closely examined.” The Association also announced its intent to “present the evidence of this important new study to members of Congress at (its) Legislative Conference,” at which Dr. Katzman was joined a panel of speakers including U.S. Representative Jason Altmire (D-PA) and Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Ken Salazar (D-CO). At the national conference, Dr. Katzman noted that the current competitive bidding process is flawed; potentially leading to higher reimbursement prices and diminished quality of customer service. Eli’s Home Care Week notes that the paper has “gained the HME industry’s attention”, and that “stakeholders have embraced the SEJ study and its potential power to sway members of Congress to recall or revamp the program.”
